Bruges is located in the northwest of Belgium, it is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders. The historic city centre of Bruges is oval-shaped and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The city has most of its medieval architecture intact, along with a collection of medieval and early modern art, including the world-famous collection of Flemish Primitives. Numerous of its medieval buildings are famous around the world, for example the Church of Our Lady which is one of the world's tallest brick towers. Not to mention the sculpture Madonna and Child which is believed to be the only sculpture of Michelangelo to have left Italy within his lifetime. However, the most renowned landmark of Bruges is its 13th-century belfry. Mostly because of its municipal carillon comprising 48 bells. Do not miss a free concert by a carillonneur once visiting Bruges. The city is very often referred to as "The Venice of the North" together with other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam.
