Taiyuan is the capital of the Shanxi province in China. With a population of more than 3 million inhabitants, Taiyuan is the political, economic and cultural center of Shanxi. The city boasts a spectacular setting, bounded on three sides by mountains and a location in the center of the province of Shanxi. It is one of the great industrial cities of China and lies on the Fen River in the north of its fertile upper basin. Thanks to its long and fascinating history started in 500 BC, it was an ancient capital and it gave birth to many of China’s emperors, Taiyuan has many tourist attractions, among which the unique Jinci Temple, one of the most original and oldest in northeastern China, recently listed as a state protected sight of cultural heritage. However, the symbol of Taiyuan is the Shuangta Si (Twin-Pagoda Temple), a temple containing two pagodas dating from the Ming dynasty which offer some great views over the city. Another major attraction is the Tianlong Shan Stone Caves with some magnificent sculptures dating from the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Taiyuan benefits has a convenient public transport system, since the city is the provincial transportation hub. Shanxi noodles are highly reputed all over China, as well as the local vinegar. Other local delicacies are the Tou Nao, the Steamed Dumpling, Sausages and Mutton Soup. To accompany teh local cuisine there are Fen Jiu (Fen Wine) and Zhuye Qing (Zhuye Qing Wine). As well as its cuisine, the city is known for its finely crafted lacquer ware.
