Once the capital of Nicaragua, this beautiful colonial town established in 1524 is one of Nicaragua’s biggest and oldest cities. The city of León, is an important sector to Nicaragua that demonstrates Spanish Colonial architecture. The Grand Cathedral of the Assumption, built in the beginning of the 18th century, is one of the largest in Central America. Walking around León shows how time has evolved and passed. Just a couple of kilometers outside the main city center are the ruins of the old León. It is an UNESCO World Heritage site that shows the wrath of nature which experts believe due to an eruption from the Momotombo volcano, caused an abandonment of the colony, which was then discovered almost 400 years later through excavations. León is Nicaragua’s main pride.
